Spring is almost here. But, with the change in the weather it might be time to make sure your home is ready for these warm days. The winter takes it’s toll on our homes. Below are the Top 5 Tips to Prepare Your Home for Spring, saving you money and keeping your home efficient.
- Have roof flashing, caulking, shingles inspected in preparation for the spring storms.
Check for continuity of shingles on the planes of the roof and on the ridges. Any flashing should be close-fitting and sealed with a quality roofing sealant.
- Inspect caulking and weather stripping around windows and doors.
The winter cold can often cause windows and doors to separate slightly from their frames. Apply external silicone caulking or sealant to seal and fill small openings. Clear silicone may be your best bet under thresholds and wood framing.
- Replace HVAC filters.
Blocked filters reduce the energy efficiency of your air conditioning system. A dirty filter hinders the HVAC’s ability to push and pull air through air ducts and registers. Also, in the spring allergens are higher. So, if your family suffers from such allergies make sure to replace your filters every 45-60 days.
- Install an attic fan or vent.
Have you ever been in your attic during the hot summer months? If so you already know the sweltering heat that lives up there. A power attic fan or ridge vents are highly effective in keeping the attic cooler leaving the heat outside where it belongs.
- Inspect the insulation around your windows and doors.
Make sure that your door and windows are insulated properly to keep air out. In the case of your doors, make sure all weather stripping is intact and creating a proper seal. As for windows, check the seals around each window making sure there is no splitting, cracking, or peeling in the seals.
